About

Charles Howard Schmid Jr., known as the "Pied Piper of Tucson," was an American criminal whose actions in the 1960s drew major press and popular culture attention. Charismatic among Tucson teenagers, Schmid used that influence to lure and manipulate young people; his behavior and crimes received extensive contemporary news coverage and inspired literary works about juvenile violence.

Between 1964 and 1965, Schmid committed murders of teenage girls that shocked the local community. His trial attracted national magazines and commentary from prominent lawyers, becoming a landmark case about the media fame of criminals and social vulnerability among suburban youth in the 1960s. In 1966 he was sentenced to death, a penalty later commuted to 50 years following legal changes to capital punishment.

While incarcerated he made escape attempts and, for a time, took up writing poetry, which drew academic interest. Schmid was killed in 1975 by fellow inmates. The case continues to be cited in studies of crime, media, and the construction of myths around violent figures.
