About

Charlotte Luise Antoinette von Lengefeld was a German writer and translator associated with the cultivated circle of Weimar, especially through her long acquaintance with central figures of German Classicism. Born into an aristocratic family in Rudolstadt, she received an education suited to life at the ducal court and early came into contact with the literary networks that orbited Goethe and Charlotte von Stein.

Today best known as the wife of the poet Friedrich Schiller, Lengefeld maintained an intense, literary correspondence with him both before and after their 1790 marriage; her letters show active intellectual participation in the artistic milieu of the time. Although she published nothing in her lifetime, she has been recognized as the author of texts that appeared posthumously among her husband’s papers, including the novel attributed to her, Die heimliche Heirat.

Besides her work as an epistolary writer, she distinguished herself as a translator—she worked on a version of Racine’s Britannicus—and as a figure of cultural mediation at the turn of the nineteenth century. In recent decades her work and role within the Goethe–Schiller circle have received renewed critical attention, consolidating her legacy as a collaborator and interlocutor during one of the most influential periods of German literature.
