About

Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English poet of the nineteenth century, noted for her contribution to Victorian poetry and for her children’s verse. A member of a culturally active family—daughter of the Italian poet Gabriele Rossetti and sister of the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti—her work ranged across religious, moral and fantastic themes, reflecting both her Anglican faith and the social tensions of her time.

She published important collections, notably The Prince’s Progress (1856) and Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), the latter securing her a lasting place in English literature for its multiple readings and symbolism. She also wrote verses for children, gathered in Sing-Song: a Nursery Rhyme Book (1872, 1893), which influenced the tradition of nursery rhymes.

Rossetti’s work is remembered for the musicality of its lines, vivid imagery and a sensitive handling of themes such as desire, temptation and redemption. Her literary reputation remained strong after her death in 1894, and her poems continue to be included in critical studies and anthologies of Victorian poetry.
