Claude Berri

About

Claude Berri was a central figure in French cinema as a director, producer, screenwriter and occasional actor. After an Oscar-winning short, he came to prominence with his first feature, Le Vieil homme et l'enfant (1967), a partly autobiographical film about a Jewish boy during the Occupation that established his international reputation. Over the following decades he alternated directing popular films and ambitious literary adaptations with an equally influential role as a producer.

As a producer and distributor, Berri helped launch and finance both mainstream comedies and avant-garde works, supporting filmmakers such as Jean Eustache, Jacques Rivette and Roman Polanski. Founder of Renn Productions, he took part in the production of memorable films — among them Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources (1986), Germinal (1993) and Tess (1979) — projects that marked French cinema for their scope and budgetary ambition.

His career also included collaborations with a wide range of national filmmakers, support for the careers of comic actors and institutional leadership at the Cinémathèque française, where he worked on reorganizing the archive. Berri’s legacy rests on a rare combination of commercial instinct and artistic commitment that helped shape the French film industry from the postwar period into the early twenty-first century.
