About

Claudia Llosa is a Peruvian filmmaker, screenwriter and producer, internationally recognized for films that examine memory, identity and social tensions in contemporary Peru. Trained in Film Directing at the University of Lima and further educated in New York, Sundance and Madrid, she began her career in advertising, an experience she drew on to manage the distribution and promotion of her work.

Her first feature, Madeinusa, shot in the Andes, won awards at festivals such as Sundance, Rotterdam and Mar del Plata, establishing her as a singular voice in Peruvian cinema. In 2009 she reached global attention with The Milk of Sorrow (La teta asustada), winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin and multiple international prizes, and nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

In addition to features, she has directed shorts addressing gender and image — including Loxoro and El niño pepita — and has taken part in collective projects within the Ibero-American scene. In 2014 she made her English-language debut with Aloft, starring international actors, a work that brought her festival recognition.

Her career combines attention to social and aesthetic concerns with participation in prestigious circuits, establishing a body of work marked by narrative sensitivity and by the presence of Peruvian cinema in contemporary film debate.
