About

Henri, Count of Chambord, was a central figure of nineteenth-century French legitimism. The posthumous son of the Duke of Berry and grandson of Charles X, he became Duke of Bordeaux at birth and was briefly and symbolically declared King of France and Navarre during the July Revolution of 1830. The Bourbon family's deposition forced him into exile, where he maintained the dynastic claim for decades.

Childless, he married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este, but the lack of heirs and doubts about the validity of the royal abdications deepened divisions within the monarchist camp. After the deaths of the senior heads of the elder branch, many legitimists came to regard him as head of the House of Bourbon.

In the 1870s, when the collapse of the Second Empire opened the door to a possible restoration, Henri refused essential compromises: he insisted on the return of the white flag and on asserting the divine origin of royal power, positions that split the alliance with the Orléanists and made his accession to the throne impossible.

His legacy is that of an uncompromising pretender whose stance, paradoxically, helped consolidate the Third Republic. He died in 1883 and left his estate to his nephew Robert I of Parma, including the Château de Chambord.
