About

Rupprecht Maria Luitpold Ferdinand was the last crown prince of Bavaria and a central figure in the region’s transition from the old monarchical regime to a republic. The son of King Ludwig III, he rose to prominence as a military commander in World War I, achieving defensive successes and leading a counteroffensive in the Lorraine campaign; in 1916 he was promoted to field marshal.

He lost the throne with the postwar revolutions that turned Bavaria into a republic, although royalist circles continued to regard him as the legitimate monarch. He first married Duchess Marie Gabrielle, with whom he had five children, and later Princess Antonia of Luxembourg, with whom he had six more children.

Opposed to the Nazi regime, Rupprecht went into exile in 1939; during the German occupation of Hungary his family was arrested and sent to the Sachsenhausen and Dachau camps, from which they were liberated in 1945. His life combined a military career, dynastic claims and resistance to Nazism, leaving a complex legacy in Bavarian history.
