About

Dan Dailey was an American actor and dancer whose career flourished particularly in Hollywood comedies and musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. Originally from vaudeville and Broadway, Dailey became one of the leading names at 20th Century Fox, appearing in hits such as Mother Wore Tights (1947) and When My Baby Smiles at Me (1948), the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Over the course of his career, he moved between studios such as MGM and Fox, working with renowned directors including John Ford, and appearing in popular titles like A Ticket to Tomahawk (1950) and There's No Business Like Show Business (1954). He also recorded songs with the Andrews Sisters and portrayed sports- and biographical figures, notably pitcher Dizzy Dean in The Pride of St. Louis (1951).

With the decline of the musical genre, Dailey shifted to television, where he starred in series such as The Governor & J.J., a role that earned him a Golden Globe in 1969. His legacy remains linked to the studio-era golden age of musicals and to his versatility across stage, film, and TV.
