Dan Jenkins

About

Dan Jenkins was an American sportswriter and author whose witty, good-humored prose shaped coverage of golf and American football in the twentieth century. He worked for publications such as the Fort Worth Press, the Dallas Times Herald, Playboy and, above all, Sports Illustrated, for which he wrote more than 500 pieces and covered historic college football games. His journalism career spanned decades until 1985, when he devoted himself full time to fiction and to monthly contributions for specialist magazines.

The author of novels and memoirs — among them Semi-Tough and Dead Solid Perfect — Jenkins moved easily between reporting and fiction, recreating the sporting world with characters and episodes drawn from real life. He received notable honors, including induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame (Lifetime Achievement), the PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award and the Red Smith Award, reflecting his influence on sportswriting.

Also a high-level amateur golfer and a respected figure in his community, Jenkins left a legacy both through his literary output and by shaping a style of sports narrative that blends humor, criticism and affection for the game's protagonists.
