About

Daniel Kahikina Akaka was an American educator and politician who represented Hawaii in Congress for more than three decades, serving as a U.S. Representative (1977–1990) and as a United States Senator (1990–2013). A member of the Democratic Party, he built his career in teaching and in administrative roles in educational and community programs in Hawaii before entering elective politics.

In the Senate, he chaired committees focused on Native peoples and veterans, and worked on recognition and reparative legislation: he sponsored measures that led to posthumous decorations for Asian-American soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and to recognition of benefits for Filipino veterans. He was also the author of a well-known bill that sought to establish federal recognition and a self-governance regime for Native Hawaiians — a controversial proposal debated for many years.

Akaka left a legacy defined by his advocacy for veterans, for indigenous peoples’ rights, and for policy initiatives centered on Hawaii. He did not seek re-election in 2012 and remained a prominent figure in the state’s political history.
