David Geffen is an American businessman and cultural producer known for his central role in the music and film industries from the 1970s through the 1990s. He began as a talent agent and co‑founded Asylum Records in 1971, a label that helped define the California folk‑rock sound by releasing artists such as the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits. In 1980 he founded Geffen Records, which quickly rose to prominence by working with widely known artists and releasing landmark albums, including John Lennon’s Double Fantasy.
In the recording industry he also created the DGC Records imprint (1990) and was a co‑founder of DreamWorks Records in 1996; his initiatives influenced multiple generations and genres, from pop to alternative rock. In film, he founded the Geffen Film Company in 1982 and in 1994 co‑founded DreamWorks SKG, a venture that combined film production with studio ambitions.
Over the course of his career he became one of the most powerful figures in entertainment, recognized for combining commercial vision, artistic instinct, and skill in negotiations and partnerships.
