About
Denise Levertov was a poet born in England who became a naturalized American citizen, recognized as an important figure in twentieth-century contemporary poetry. Initially writing in traditional verse forms, her work changed under the influence of the Black Mountain poets and William Carlos Williams, adopting a more direct and experimental language that cemented her reputation, notably with poems such as "With Eyes at the Back of Our Heads."
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Levertov openly integrated the personal and the political in her poetry. Active against the Vietnam War, she participated in anti-military movements, signed tax protests, and worked as an editor for progressive publications, supporting feminist and left-wing voices. Her writing from this period reflects humanitarian and ethical concerns, as in poems that address pain and loss.
In addition to her poetic output, Levertov had a significant academic career: she taught at institutions such as Brandeis, MIT, Tufts, the University of Massachusetts, and Stanford, where she took part in graduate writing programs. She received recognition for her literary career, including the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry, and left a legacy as a combative and sensitive voice that combined form, spirituality, and political commitment.
