About

Dian Fossey was an American primatologist and conservationist best known for her pioneering study of mountain gorillas in Rwanda from 1966 to 1985. Recruited for fieldwork by paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, she lived for decades in montane forests, observing the social routines and behaviors of gorilla groups and establishing the Karisoke Research Center as a base for long-term study.

Author of Gorillas in the Mist, Fossey combined scientific research with outspoken conservation advocacy: she exposed illegal poaching, opposed predatory forms of tourism, and sought to raise public awareness of gorillas’ intelligence and social complexity. Her work helped reduce the species’ population decline and increased global attention to efforts to protect these primates.

Fossey was part of a group of researchers recruited by Leakey to study great apes in their natural habitats, alongside Jane Goodall and Birutė Galdikas. Killed violently in 1985, her life and work influenced conservation policy, later research, and public perception of endangered species protection.
