About

Henri Eugène Philippe Louis d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, was a prince of the House of Orléans whose life encompassed a military career, political activity, and a notable role as a collector and bibliophile. A son of Louis‑Philippe I, he inherited a substantial fortune and extensive real estate, including the Chantilly estate, which became the core of his collection of artworks and manuscripts.

A career soldier, he served in campaigns in Algeria, where he was promoted to lieutenant‑general and governed colonial possessions; he took part in expeditions and pacification actions, and later, during the Third Republic, presided over the court‑martial that tried Marshal Bazaine. His life was also marked by two periods of exile imposed by regime changes.

As a man of letters and patron, he devoted himself to historical research and the publication of studies on families and military campaigns, and assembled a collection of recognized importance. Widowed and without surviving direct heirs, he bequeathed his collections and the Chantilly estate to the Institut de France, ensuring a lasting cultural legacy.

His public life reflected the tensions of nineteenth‑century France: military and political engagement, the dynastic weight of the restored monarchy, and a decision to preserve artistic heritage as a public contribution.
