About
Diane di Prima was an American poet, writer, playwright and artist associated with the Beat Generation. Author of more than forty books translated into several languages, she was notable both for her literary output and for her editorial work — she co‑founded the New York Poets Theatre, edited the newspaper The Floating Bear and founded Poets Press — roles that placed her at the center of New York and San Francisco creative networks in the 1950s and 1960s.
Her early work, This Kind of Bird Flies Backward (1958), is cited as a landmark of the Beat movement; over the course of her life she maintained lively correspondence and collaboration with contemporary literary figures. She lived on both the East and West Coasts of the U.S., helped link the Beat generations with the hippie counterculture, and taught for more than two decades at the Naropa Institute.
In addition to her poetry, Di Prima was an activist: a feminist militant involved in human rights causes, she faced legal actions and intimidation over material regarded as obscene in her work. Her writing also addressed social issues such as fatphobia, reflecting a public commitment to marginalized groups.
She died in 2020 in San Francisco, leaving an editorial, pedagogical and political presence in the North American poetry scene.
