Dick Grove

About

Richard Dean "Dick" Grove was an American musician, composer, arranger and educator, known for founding a school dedicated to contemporary music instruction in Los Angeles. As a jazz pianist he performed with figures such as Alvino Rey, Paul Horn, Buddy Rich and Nancy Wilson, and he accumulated teaching experience that led him to systematize methods suited to the professional market.

In the 1970s he created the Dick Grove School of Music, whose program integrated theory, modern harmony, improvisation and aural training aimed at contemporary styles. Later, when the school ceased in-person activities, he reorganized his work into a distance-learning format with the Grove School Without Walls, offering programs with books, videos and accompaniment tracks.

Grove published extensively on musicianship, jazz harmony, ear training, improvisation, composition and arranging. Among his pedagogical contributions are methods for linking chord symbols and modal theory to aural training, the notion of chord families and practical concepts for complex voicings, reharmonization and voice-leading–driven progressions.

His legacy endures through teaching materials still sold and through teachers and former students who have spread his educational approaches in contemporary music instruction.
