About

Richard Allen “Dick” Wagner was an American guitarist, songwriter and author whose career was best known for studio work and tours with artists such as Alice Cooper, Lou Reed and Kiss, and for leading bands in the Michigan scene. In the 1960s he led Frost, serving as vocalist, arranger and principal songwriter on three albums for Vanguard, and became a central figure in the Detroit-area music scene.

In the early 1970s he formed the power trio Ursa Major and then joined Lou Reed’s studio and touring band, co-writing the arrangements that adapted Velvet Underground songs for the stage and culminated in the live success Rock ’n’ Roll Animal. His guitar duet with Steve Hunter received critical recognition and influenced other guitarists.

His partnership with Alice Cooper established Wagner as co-writer and band director on concept albums such as Welcome to My Nightmare; he also co-wrote hits like Only Women Bleed and often participated, sometimes uncredited, on recordings by other major artists and groups of the era. As a studio musician and producer, he left a lasting impact on 1970s rock and on subsequent productions.
