Austrian businessman Dietrich Mateschitz was cofounder and the principal force behind transforming the drink Red Bull into the global leader in energy drinks. Trained in marketing, he began his career at companies such as Unilever and Blendax; after discovering a Thai formula, he adapted the product and founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984, launching it in Austria in 1987. Under his leadership, the brand became synonymous with marketing focused on extreme sports, sponsoring and creating events and teams that established the company’s adventurous identity.
Mateschitz was also heavily involved in motorsport: he acquired and renamed Formula 1 teams, including Red Bull Racing and the sister team now called Racing Bulls, as well as football clubs such as FC Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig. These initiatives turned sports investments into strategic pillars of the brand’s global expansion.
Beyond beverages and sports, he owned media outlets in Austria, such as the magazine Seitenblicke and the channel ServusTV. His business and sponsorship activities left a lasting mark on the sports entertainment industry and on how brands connect with young and extreme-audience consumers.
