About
Gerardo Murillo Coronado, known by the pseudonym Dr. Atl, was a Mexican painter, writer and intellectual whose work marked the transition to modern art in Mexico. He became famous for monumental landscapes that celebrate the country’s volcanic and mountainous terrain, notably through compositions that blended naturalist Romanticism with an advocacy for Mexican cultural identity.
Active from the early 20th century, Dr. Atl promoted a program of monumental public art that anticipated the muralist movement; he served as director of the Academy of San Carlos and played a formative role for artists such as José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. He also organized studies and exhibitions of popular arts, contributing to interest in indigenous roots after the Revolution.
In addition to his visual work, he wrote essays, criticism and studies on volcanology; he is the author of accounts of the Paricutín eruption, an experience that earned him scientific recognition and led to the amputation of a leg. He received major national honors and left a lasting legacy as a central figure in defining Mexican art and culture in the 20th century.
