About

Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, known as Katharine, Duchess of Kent, was a member of the British royal family and the wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. Over several decades she carried out public duties on behalf of the Crown, notably appearing at social and sporting events and serving as the presenter of the Wimbledon trophies, a role inherited from her mother‑in‑law.

Raised in a school environment with a strong musical emphasis, she sang in choirs and studied piano, organ and violin; music remained a hallmark of her public life. She married in 1961 and had three children; the loss of a stillborn child in 1977 and the subsequent depression were made public, drawing attention to her engagement with personal and social issues.

In 1994 she attracted attention for converting to Catholicism, a decision that resonated within the context of the royal family. Known for informal and warm manner, in 2002 she voluntarily relinquished the use of the style Her Royal Highness, though she continued to be addressed that way in official settings. Her legacy combines public service, a close connection to the arts and visibility at national ceremonies.
