About

Henrietta Anne Stuart was an English princess by birth who became Duchess of Orléans through her marriage to Philippe I, younger brother of Louis XIV. The youngest daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France, she fled England during the Civil War and was raised at the French court, where she acquired great prestige and the nickname “Minette.”

Her marriage to the king’s brother strengthened dynastic ties between the royal houses and brought her into the political and social life of Louis XIV’s court. Known for her charming personality and amorous relationships, Henrietta played an active role in diplomatic negotiations and is mentioned in the dealings that preceded the Secret Treaty of Dover.

Her family’s influence and her proximity to the queen mother shaped her public position; the marriage, though happy at times, suffered tensions related to court intrigues and her husband’s reputation. She left descendants whose line later underpinned Jacobite claims.

She died prematurely in 1670; her short life on the borders of the English and French monarchies made her an emblematic figure of the seventeenth-century dynastic and cultural intersections.
