About

Randall Harold “Duke” Cunningham was a military officer, pilot, and American politician whose public career combined notable military achievements and a corruption scandal that marked his life. As a Navy aviator, he was one of the few pilots confirmed as an ace in the Vietnam War, became an instructor in the prestigious Strike Fighter Tactics program (TOPGUN), and commanded the adversary squadron VF-126 at Miramar. His flight experience and media visibility propelled him into politics.

Elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990, he represented districts in San Diego County from 1991 to 2005. In the House, he served on the Appropriations and Intelligence Committees, chaired the Subcommittee on Human Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and was recognized as the Republican specialist on national security issues. He also used his position to secure federal funding for education and early cancer-detection initiatives.

His political career ended with his resignation in 2005 after he admitted to accepting bribes from defense contractors; he was convicted and served a prison sentence, in addition to being required to make restitution. That episode overshadowed his military and legislative record, making him a controversial figure in recent U.S. political history.
