About

Ferdinand Philippe Marie de Orléans, known as the Duke of Alençon, was a prince of the House of Orléans and a figure of the French aristocracy in the 19th century. A grandson of King Louis Philippe I, he lived through his family’s exile after the Revolution of 1848 and received military training at foreign schools, serving as an officer in the Spanish army and later in the French army when political circumstances allowed.

He married in 1868 to Sophie Charlotte of Bavaria, and the couple had two children; his wife became known for her religious commitment and died tragically in the Bazar de la Charité fire in 1897. The duke, attached to the Third Order of Saint Francis, devoted a significant part of his life to charitable work and adopted a deeply religious stance in his later decades.

A politician by position rather than by ambition, he declined dynastic offers to the Spanish crown out of loyalty to family principles and preferred to preserve his French title. Notable for his ties to European royal houses, he cultivated relationships that made him an informal intermediary within the monarchical networks of the period.

He died in 1910; his remains and those of his wife were placed in the Orléans mausoleum at Dreux, where his memory remains associated with his family’s military and religious traditions and service.
