About
Amedeo of Savoy, third Duke of Aosta, was an Italian aristocrat and military officer whose career was tied to colonial campaigns and the conflicts of both world wars. A grandson of King Amadeo I of Spain, he distinguished himself as a volunteer in the First World War, rising through combat merit to the rank of captain. In the following decades he took part in operations in Italy’s North African colonies, gaining notoriety as the so‑called “Prince of the Sahara.”
Married to Princess Anna Elena of Orléans, he lived at the Castello di Miramare in Trieste before taking on colonial governance roles. In 1937 he was appointed Viceroy of Ethiopia (governor‑general) and, at the outbreak of the Second World War, came to command Italian forces in East Africa, including Eritrea and Italian Somaliland.
The British offensive in 1941 and the restoration of power by Haile Selassie precipitated the collapse of Italian control. Amedeo surrendered in May 1941 and was taken prisoner; he died in 1942 at an English camp in Nairobi from complications of malaria and tuberculosis. His life was defined by his military and administrative role in the Italian colonial empire and by the controversies inherent to occupation and war.
