About

Ferdinando of Savoy, third Duke of Genoa and Prince of Udine, was a member of the Italian royal family and a senior officer of the Royal Italian Navy. During World War I he served as capitano di navio, commanding the reconnaissance cruiser Sparviero in 1917–1918 and receiving decorations for personal bravery. In May 1917 he headed an Italian delegation to the United States that included figures such as Guglielmo Marconi, tasked with strengthening financial and commercial agreements in support of the war effort.

In the 1920s and 1930s he carried out naval and diplomatic duties: in 1927 he commanded a squadron sent to Tangier to assert Italian interests, and in 1930 he represented King Victor Emmanuel III at the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I. He succeeded to the dukedom in 1931 and, in his naval career, rose to the rank of admiral, eventually commanding the Upper Adriatic.

He married Maria Luisa Alliaga Gandolfi in 1938; they had no children. He was the last Duke of Genoa to exercise the title during the monarchical period; after the proclamation of the republic in 1946 his successors became claimants.
