About

Adolf Friedrich Albrecht Heinrich, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, was known as an explorer and public figure connected to Africa and German institutions in the 20th century. In the early decades of the century he took part in and led scientific expeditions into the African interior (1907–1908; 1910–1911), surveying then little‑mapped regions—from the Chad Basin to the Bahr el‑Ghazal and islands in the Gulf of Guinea—and publishing illustrated reports that contributed to the cartography and ethnography of the period.

Appointed governor of German Togoland (1912–1914), his career moved between colonial administration, scientific travel and military service during the First World War. After the conflict he was involved in various public and private initiatives, maintaining an interest in African enterprises and international economic contacts in the following decades.

In the sporting and institutional sphere, he served on the International Olympic Committee (1926–1956) and was president of the German Olympic Committee from 1949 to 1951. He lived until 1969, leaving a legacy tied both to scientific exploration in Africa and to engagement with German cultural and sporting organizations.
