About

Duke Christian Ludwig of Mecklenburg was a member of the former ruling house of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and lived through Germany’s transition from monarchy to republic in the twentieth century. The son of the last Grand Duke, his family was forced into exile after the 1918 abdication, later returning to the family estate at Ludwigslust, where he grew up and began a military career in the 1930s.

During World War II he served in a cavalry regiment and was mobilized in 1939; in 1944 he was dismissed under a decree affecting members of former royal houses. Near the end of the war he was arrested by Soviet authorities, deported to Moscow and sentenced, serving a term until his release in 1953 through German government repatriation efforts.

In the postwar years he managed family interests and took part in European dynastic and social events, maintaining ties with other royal houses. He married Princess Barbara of Prussia in 1954 and had two daughters. His life reflects the loss of dynastic privileges in Germany and the adaptation of noble families to the twentieth century’s changed political realities.
