About

Bernhard Henry Frederick of Saxe-Meiningen (Bernhard Erich Freund von Sachsen-Meiningen) was a German duke of the small state of Saxe-Meiningen, active in the 19th century. He inherited the title as a child in 1803 and remained under his mother's regency until reaching majority in 1821; in 1826 he reinforced his dynastic position by receiving the counties of Hildburghausen and Saalfeld during the reorganization of the Saxon territories.

Prominent as head of the royal house, he kept a reputation as a domestic man, proud of the royal household and attentive to his duties as husband and father. In 1825 he married Princess Marie Frederica of Hesse-Kassel; the couple had two children, including George II, who succeeded him and played a more prominent political and cultural role.

In the context of the German wars of unification, Bernhard sided with Austria during the Austro-Prussian War (1866). After Austria's defeat he was forced to abdicate in favor of his son and spent the remainder of his life as a private citizen. His legacy is chiefly dynastic and tied to the continuity of the House of Saxe-Meiningen.
