About

Dwayne Bernard Hickman was an American actor who became widely known on 1950s and 1960s television as a familiar face in youth-oriented comedy series. He began as a child actor in 1940s films and rose to prominence playing Chuck, the nephew on The Bob Cummings Show, a role that led to his best-known part: Dobie Gillis, the title character of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959–1963). The series established his image as a comic leading man and made him one of the era’s most popular young actors.

After the series ended, he faced the stigma of being seen as forever young in television and film roles, but he remained steadily employed in productions such as Cat Ballou and various American International Pictures films in the 1960s. He expanded into voice work and continued to appear in television programs and TV movies in subsequent decades.

Turning to work behind the scenes, Hickman served as a CBS programming executive (1977–1988) and directed episodes of television series, while continuing to act occasionally into the 2000s. He published the memoir Forever Dobie and, in retirement, devoted himself to custom painting. He died in 2022, leaving a legacy mainly tied to the golden age of the American sitcom.
