About

Edmond Rostand was a French poet and playwright whose reputation was cemented at the end of the 19th century, chiefly by the play Cyrano de Bergerac (1897). Born into a wealthy family, he left a legal career to devote himself to literature, debuting on the stage in the late 1880s and achieving wide recognition with Les Romanesques (1894) before the monumental success of Cyrano.

The work that made him famous, written in verse and inspired by the historical figure of the same name, turned him into a public idol and led to his election to the Académie Française in 1904. Rostand revived romantic themes — idealized love, heroism and medieval or religious inspiration — at a time dominated by realism, giving his plays a nostalgic and epic tone.

He collaborated with celebrated actresses of the day such as Sarah Bernhardt, and produced notable titles including La Princesse Lointaine, La Samaritaine and L’Aiglon. His play Chantecler (1910), allegorical and bold, divided critics but reaffirmed his theatrical ambition. He died in 1918, leaving a legacy defined by a single immortal success and a lasting influence on the French-language dramatic repertoire.
