About
Edmundo Rafael O’Gorman was a Mexican historian and philosopher recognized for renewing historiographical reflection in the twentieth century. Trained in law, he dedicated himself to history and philosophy at UNAM, where he earned a master’s and a doctorate; he also worked at the General Archive of the Nation, the Universidad Ibero‑americana and at research institutes that shaped his academic career.
His work combines documentary rigor with philosophical grounding: he coined an approach called historiology that emphasizes the historicity of events and criticizes teleological and essentialist readings. Influenced by Ortega y Gasset, Benedetto Croce and R. G. Collingwood, he sought to understand how the past is interpretively constructed by the present.
Among his most notable titles are Historia de las divisiones territoriales de México, Crisis y porvenir de la ciencia histórica and La invención de América, a work that reevaluated the origin of the concept of “America” and contributed to critiques of traditional narratives about the European encounter with the New World.
Institutionally recognized with national awards and an honorary doctorate, O’Gorman left a lasting legacy in Mexican historiography by integrating history and philosophy and promoting a self‑critical, reflective practice of history.
