About

Jean-Édouard Vuillard was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and set designer associated with the Symbolist group Les Nabis. Trained in prominent Paris studios — the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts — he shared practices and studios with contemporaries such as Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis, and took an active part in exhibitions at the turn of the 20th century.

His work is characterized by interiors and still lifes that convey an intimate, domestic atmosphere, often composed with decorative delicacy and attention to pattern and color. From the 1890s he also worked extensively in lithography and illustration for magazines and books, spreading his aesthetic in the graphic arts.

Vuillard also produced large decorative panels and stage designs, collaborating with avant-garde theatre companies and receiving notable public commissions, including panels for the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (1913) and works for the Palais de Chaillot (1937) and the Palais des Nations (1939). Praised by critics, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1938, cementing his reputation in decorative painting and the sensitive depiction of everyday life.
