About
Eduard Spranger was a German educator and psychologist whose work helped establish pedagogy as an autonomous academic discipline in the early twentieth century. Author of influential works such as Lebensformen (1921) and Psychologie des Jugendalters (1924), he focused on the holistic development of the individual, arguing for an education directed toward the cultivation of an "inner humanity" and advancing ideas that shaped the philosophy of education and teacher training in Germany.
A professor at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig, Spranger achieved wide public prominence: his lectures drew thousands of students, and he took an active part in academic institutions and pedagogical debate, founding the journal Die Erziehung and joining the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He held advisory posts at the Prussian Ministry of Education and played a significant role in teacher training policy during the 1920s.
The political context of the 1930s placed his career in an ambiguous position. Although he signed the 1933 university declaration of loyalty to the new regime and made remarks that were interpreted as conciliatory toward aspects of the Nazi movement, Spranger also internally opposed antisemitic expressions and interventions he regarded as degrading to scientific work, and he subsequently submitted his resignation from the university.
