About

Eleonora Duse was one of the most influential Italian actresses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for renewing stage acting with an inward, delicate style. Born into a family of performers, she debuted as a child and gained early recognition for her portrayals of Thérèse Raquin and other emotionally charged roles, such as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana. Her reputation expanded throughout Europe and the Americas through tours that made her an international figure.

Duse created her own company, combining the functions of star, director, and manager, and she preferred restrained expression to showmanship—an approach that distinguished her from contemporaries like Sarah Bernhardt. She was given roles by playwrights such as Gabriele d’Annunzio and staged works by Ibsen, becoming a reference for later generations of actors.

Beyond her stage career, she mentored young performers and influenced artists in other fields, with her working methods recognized by prominent figures in the arts. She struggled with health problems during her life and finally ended her stage career after long tours; her death in 1924 prompted transatlantic tributes and left a durable legacy in the history of theatre.
