About

Elena Garro was a multifaceted Mexican writer: novelist, short-story author, playwright, screenwriter and journalist. Her work, marked by prose close to poetry, is among the earliest expressions of what is commonly called magical realism in Latin America, with key titles such as Un hogar sólido, Los recuerdos del porvenir and La semana de colores. Although she rejected the label, her writing engages with the surreal and with dramatic techniques, aligning her with European references and the theatre of the absurd.

Throughout her career she played a notable role in university theatre and experimental cinema, and pursued studies at Berkeley and the Sorbonne. Her personal life — including her marriage to Octavio Paz and participation in intellectual events such as the 1937 Congress in Spain — shaped both her work and its critical reception. In the 1960s and 1970s she faced ostracism and self-imposed exile amid political controversy, which interrupted her public activity for long periods.

Awarded prizes such as the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in 1996, Garro left a literary legacy that is now reassessed as central to understanding the Mexican and Latin American literary landscape of the twentieth century, inspiring studies on language, memory and revolutionary violence.
