Eli Wallach was an American actor whose extensive career in the stage, film, and television spanned more than six decades. Trained originally in theatre and influenced by the Method, he was a founding member of the Actors Studio and became known as one of the most celebrated character actors, accumulating more than 90 film credits. He received major awards during his life, including a Tony, a BAFTA and an Emmy, as well as an honorary Academy Award in 2010 and induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
His stage work includes roles in plays by Tennessee Williams and in introducing Ionesco’s plays to American audiences, establishing him in theatre as a versatile performer and a long‑standing presence on Broadway tours and productions. In film, he was noted for memorable characters such as Calvera in The Magnificent Seven and Tuco in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, contributions that earned him a lasting reputation as a memorable supporting actor.
Wallach formed both an artistic and personal partnership with actress Anne Jackson, with whom he frequently shared the stage. His work left a legacy in the portrayal of complex characters and in spreading postwar dramatic techniques, influencing subsequent generations of actors and directors.
