About

Emanuel Querido was a Dutch publisher, novelist and anti‑Nazi activist, known for founding the publishing houses Em. Querido's Uitgevers‑Mij and Querido Verlag. Born into a Sephardic Jewish family, he entered the book trade in Amsterdam in the early 20th century and, from 1904 onward, began publishing works of social and literary character, including translations and progressive authors.

Over the decades Querido became a central figure in the Dutch publishing world: he published novel cycles under the pseudonym Joost Mendes and, above all, ran a press notable for its graphic quality and editorial scope. In partnership with Alice van Nahuys and the exiled publisher Fritz Landshoff he promoted the publication of Exilliteratur in German, founding Querido Verlag in 1934 to give a voice to authors persecuted by the Nazi regime.

The German occupation ended that initiative: archives and stock were confiscated and the firm was closed. Querido sought refuge with his family but was denounced, deported and murdered at Sobibór in 1943. His legacy remains linked to the defense of intellectual freedom and to editorial support for exiled writers.
