About

Émile Roux was a French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist, known as one of Louis Pasteur’s closest collaborators and a cofounder of the Institut Pasteur. His career focused on investigating the microbial bases of disease and translating that knowledge into practical interventions. With Alexandre Yersin he described the diphtheria bacillus and studied the toxin responsible for the disease, work that led from 1891 to the development of an effective antitoxin serum.

Roux coordinated clinical trials that demonstrated the usefulness of the antitoxin in children, an achievement that brought him international recognition and transformed the treatment of diphtheria. For decades he divided his time between research and administrative duties at the Institut Pasteur, where he established courses in microbiological technique that trained generations of researchers.

His work also included investigations of tetanus, tuberculosis, syphilis and pneumonia. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and, in 1904, became Director General of the Institut Pasteur, a position in which he consolidated the institution as a leading center in microbiology and immunology in the early 20th century.
