Enio Flaiano

About

Ennio Flaiano was an Italian writer and critic whose work spanned film, theatre, journalism and prose. Winner of the first Strega Prize (1947) for the novel Tempo di uccidere, he also became a regular contributor to Italy’s leading newspapers and magazines, including Il Corriere della Sera and Oggi.

As a screenwriter, he is best known for his collaboration with Federico Fellini: he co-wrote ten scripts, among them central works of Italian cinema such as La Strada, La Dolce Vita and 8½, and made decisive contributions to the style and dramatic irony of those films. He also wrote novels and columns marked by caustic humor and a melancholic view of urban life, especially Rome, a city that inspired many of his observations.

His Strega-winning novel treats themes connected to Italian colonial violence in Eritrea, and the book remained in print for decades, influencing literary debates about the colonial past. After his death in 1972, his memory was institutionalized with the establishment of the Flaiano Prize in 1975 to honor achievements in cinema, theatre, criticism and literary writing.
