About
Enrico Macias, stage name of Gaston Ghrenassia, is a singer, songwriter and musician of Sephardic Jewish origin born in Constantine, then part of French Algeria. Trained in the malouf repertoire and influenced by Andalusian music, he began his career with the orchestra of his father-in-law, the celebrated Cheikh Raymond, before going into exile in France in 1961 when the War of Independence made it impossible for him to remain.
In Paris he built a highly successful international career: he released hits such as "Adieu mon pays," which became a symbol of his exile, and blended French-language repertoire with songs of Eastern origin. He became a regular presence on major stages — the Olympia, Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall — and recorded in several languages, expanding his audience across the Mediterranean, the Soviet Union, Japan and the Americas.
Known for his humanitarian commitment, he received distinctions such as the Prix Vincent Scotto and was named a UNESCO itinerant ambassador for the defense of children. His work remains a cultural bridge between the West and the Arab/Mediterranean world, although his relationship with independent Algeria remains marked by exile and controversy.
