About
Erik Lee Preminger is an American writer, actor and producer, best known for his family connection and for work that preserves the memory of his mother, the showgirl Gypsy Rose Lee. The biological son of filmmaker Otto Preminger, his paternity was revealed only in adulthood; he was raised under the surname of his mother’s husband, Alexander Kirkland. This personal history informs his work and public recognition.
After a brief period at Columbia University, he enlisted in the Army in 1962, serving in Germany, where he met Otto Preminger again in 1967. His military service and family experiences shaped his career, which has alternated between acting, producing and writing.
Preminger is the author of a memoir about his relationship with his mother, first published in 1984 and later reissued under a new title. In 2020 he presented a multimedia documentary based on Gypsy Rose Lee’s extensive archives, including home movies, 16 mm reels and press clippings, followed by a question-and-answer session.
His career has been marked by preserving and promoting his family’s theatrical history, linking personal memory to the wider cultural landscape of twentieth-century American entertainment.
