About

Erle Stanley Gardner was an American criminal lawyer and prolific writer, best known for creating the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. Over the course of his career he published about 140 detective novels and numerous short stories, and wrote under several pseudonyms — including A. A. Fair, under which he created the duo Donald Lam and Bertha Cool. His catalogue also includes characters such as District Attorney Doug Selby and Mason’s rival Alphonse Baker Carr.

He began writing professionally in the 1920s while still practicing law, leaving the legal profession in 1933 to devote himself full time to writing. He adopted an intense production routine, dictating manuscripts to secretaries, a practice that allowed him to maintain a high publication rate and a strong presence in popular magazines and with publishers such as William Morrow.

The Perry Mason novels became a cultural phenomenon, leading to adaptations for radio, film and television — the best-known television version starring Raymond Burr — and securing Gardner long-lasting commercial and critical prominence. His work influenced the crime genre and helped establish the image of the lawyer as a fictional courtroom hero.
