Erwin Anton Gutkind

About

Erwin Anton Gutkind was a German‑Jewish architect and urban planner associated with the modern movement and the debates around Neues Bauen. Trained in Berlin, he became known for housing estates (Siedlungen) that sought to combine social housing with urban quality: his projects emphasized light, air, and sun, careful use of materials—horizontal bands of brickwork and render—and corner solutions that articulated façades and public space.

During the 1920s and 1930s he took part in discussion groups with central figures of modern architecture and contributed to the expansion of collective housing in Berlin, providing roughly 1,500 residential units in addition to public buildings and urban-planning projects. His work balanced rationalism with attention to the urban whole, arguing that the unity of the neighborhood precedes the unit of the individual house.

Persecuted by the political climate of the time, he left Germany and continued to work internationally, particularly as a historian of urbanization and as a teacher. In recognition of his career he received the Berliner Kunstpreis für Baukunst in 1968. Many of his Berlin buildings today are protected as historic and have undergone restorations.
