About

Eugénie Brazier, better known as Mother Brazier (la Mère Brazier), was a French chef who, in 1933, became the first person to receive six Michelin stars, three at each of two restaurants: La Mère Brazier on the rue Royale, one of Lyon's principal streets; and a second restaurant, also called La Mère Brazier, outside the city. This achievement remained unmatched until chef Alain Ducasse was awarded six stars in the 1998 Michelin Guide.

Brazier followed the traditions of the famed Lyon cook-women — the Mères lyonnaises — avoiding overly elaborate dishes, preferring to serve simple food of the highest quality. She influenced subsequent generations of French cooks, including Paul Bocuse and Bernard Pacaud, who trained in her restaurant. She is honored in scholarships and annual awards for culinary writing granted in her name. Her recipes were collected and published in 1977, and an English translation was published in 2014. She was offered — and refused! — the Légion d'honneur, France's highest order of merit.
