Ewan Forbes

About

Sir Ewan Forbes, 11th Baronet, was a Scottish nobleman, general practitioner and landowner whose life intersected issues of gender and hereditary succession. Born and raised in an aristocratic family in Aberdeenshire, he trained in medicine and for decades ran a clinical practice while managing the large Brux estate, also taking part in cultural pursuits such as recitals and folk dancing.

Forbes underwent medical treatment and re-registered his civil status as a man in the 1950s, legally changing his name and marrying soon after. In 1965, when he succeeded his brother to the baronetcy, his right to inherit was contested in court amid dispute over his legal sex. The litigation, decided by the Court of Session on the basis that he was intersex, upheld his claim to the title; the ruling was kept confidential at the time.

The case became better known after his death because it exposed legal gaps in the recognition of gender variation and inheritance rights. Today Forbes is remembered both for his medical service and estate management and for the role his case played in public and legal debate over identity and succession in Scotland.
