About

Fay Weldon CBE was a British novelist, short-story writer, playwright and essayist whose work became known for its ironic and forceful portrayals of women confronting the patriarchal structures of Western society. The author of more than twenty novels and collections, she gained international recognition for titles such as The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1983) and The Cloning of Joanna May (1989), which examine female identity, power and revenge in contemporary settings.

Originally trained in psychology and economics, Weldon worked in advertising before dedicating herself to literature—an experience that shaped her direct, caustic style. She also worked in television and theatre: she wrote the first episode of Upstairs, Downstairs and scripted television adaptations, as well as contributing to a West End musical.

Known for her media presence on the BBC and for a body of work associated with feminism, she published memoirs in 2002 and maintained a steady literary output over three decades. Her legacy endures in the blend of social critique, black humour and complex female characters that left a mark on contemporary British literature.
