About

Ford Madox Brown was a 19th‑century English painter associated with the Pre‑Raphaelite circle, noted for his vigorous realism and interest in medieval art. Although he never formally joined the Pre‑Raphaelite Brotherhood, he shared its rejection of academic painting and its preference for intense colors and meticulous detail; he remained friends and professional collaborators with figures such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and took part in the Morris drawing group and its associates.

His most emblematic work is Work (1852–1865), a large composition about Victorian society’s shift from a rural to an urban economy that synthesizes his social concerns and narrative approach. Another well‑known painting is The Last of England (1852–1855), a tondo depicting emigration and uprooting, which shows his attention to small everyday details and symbolic charge.

Brown also executed historical murals for Manchester Town Hall, spending the final years of his career depicting the city’s history. His output and influence reach beyond easel painting: he worked on decorative and collaborative projects with Arts and Crafts artisans, leaving a legacy as a bridge between Victorian realism and Pre‑Raphaelite ideals.
