Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English novelist and playwright whose reputation was built chiefly on her adult novels and works for children. Born in Manchester, she moved to the United States with her family while still young and began writing early, publishing short stories and sketches in periodicals such as Godey’s Lady’s Book, Scribner’s, and Harper’s Bazaar to help support her family. That steady output allowed her to rise socially and provide for her children while establishing an international career.
Over the course of her life she published novels for adults as well as numerous books for young readers; among these, The Secret Garden (1911) became her best-known work, noted for its appeal to imagination, emotional restoration, and contact with nature. Her writing blends nineteenth-century realist elements with a sensitive focus on the child’s world and the inner transformations of her characters.
Burnett also moved in cultural centers such as Paris and Washington, D.C., and her life included geographic relocations and personal struggles that shaped her work. Her literary legacy remains significant: her stories continue to be reprinted and adapted, influencing children’s literature by emphasizing emotional healing, mystery, and the importance of affectionate care.
