About

Frank Reynolds was an American journalist and television anchor whose career became established at ABC News after work at local stations in Indiana and Chicago. As a correspondent and presenter, he became known for coverage of events with major national impact, serving as co-anchor of World News Tonight from 1978 to 1983 and initially hosting the special America Held Hostage, which later evolved into Nightline.

A decorated World War II veteran who received the Purple Heart, Reynolds moved from local reporting to the national scene in the 1960s and became a recognizable figure in televised news. He was remembered for intense moments on live television, such as the coverage of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, when he reacted emotionally as conflicting information arrived.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1983, he took a leave and died that same year; his funeral prompted widespread public mourning and official tributes. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. His legacy remains tied to high‑circulation television journalism and careful coverage of national crises.
