About

Frida Kahlo was one of the most influential Mexican painters of the twentieth century, known for portraits and self-portraits rich in personal symbolism and references to Mexican popular culture. Her work blends elements of realism, magic, and pre-Columbian and Catholic traditions to address themes such as identity, gender, class, race, and bodily suffering — the latter recurring due to chronic health problems and a serious accident in her youth.

Connected to the post-revolutionary movement of national affirmation, Kahlo employed a style in dialogue with Mexican folklore and popular arts, making her canvases a vehicle for cultural assertion. She was active in the country’s intellectual and political scene, was a member of the Communist Party, and collaborated with artistic and educational institutions such as the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado.

Her work received international recognition during her lifetime, with exhibitions in New York and Paris, and continued to gain prestige posthumously: from the 1970s her oeuvre was rediscovered and, in subsequent decades, became a symbol for feminist, Chicano, and LGBT movements. Kahlo’s legacy includes not only her artistic output but also the consolidation of a powerful public image that projected Mexican culture onto the world stage.
